Despite the heart breaking loss in the final, Sindhu’s kind gesture showed her huge love for the sport and respect for her opponent. The Telangana government announced an award of Rs 1 crore for the 21-year-old, and there were reports that it is considering offering her a plot of land in the state as well. A recipient of Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award, Sindhu has been coached by Indian badminton legend Pullela Gopichand – a former world number four in men’s badminton and victor of the 2001 All England Badminton Championships. The parents also thanked coach Pullela Gopi Chand for his contribution in their daughter’s rise.
