RIO 2016: Silver medalist turns back on medal ceremony

The world’s No. 1 ranked women’s wrestler in her 48kg class, Stadnik arrived in Rio for her third straight Olympics and was desperate for a gold medal after winning bronze in 2008 and silver in London four years ago.

Azerbaijani athlete Mariya Stadnik has advanced to finals in women’s freestyle 48 kg wrestling at Rio Olympics 2016.

Bulgaria’s Elitsa Atanasova and China’s Sun Yanan earned bronze.

Marwa Amri of Tunisia became the first competitor from Africa ever to win a women’s wrestling medal after her defeat of Azerbaijan’s Yuliya Ratkevich.

She will face Colombia’s Jackeline Renteria in quarterfinals. It gave Tosaka a 3-2 victory and her first Olympic gold medal.

Vorobieva came close to breaking Japan’s iron grip on the gold medals after assembling a 2-0 lead heading into the final phases of her meeting against Dosho, but the tide eventually turned against her.

The 23-year-old Chinese spent just 54 seconds executing a four-point lift and three gut wrenches to end the match 10-0. “It hit me hard when I lost in the semifinals where I did have a chance, because I know well about Eri Tosaka”, Sun said through sobs. She previously won bronze in 2008 and silver in 2012.
