Safarova and Strycova, on the other hand, were a last-minute pairing.
Venus Williams, in particular, has had a disappointing experience in her fourth Olympic Games as she will be leaving Rio without having won a single game.
Safarova and Strycova did their best to keep hitting shots toward Venus when she was at the baseline.
In the last match to completed on the first day of play, Tsonga’s countryman Gael Monfils joined him in the second round, the No. 6 seed enjoying a comfortable 6-1 6-3 win against Vasek Pospisil of Canada.
Serena Williams said that their game suck and it showed.
Venus and Serena were the No 1 seed in Rio after claiming their 14th grand slam championship over a month ago at Wimbledon.
The Czechs, meanwhile, are unseeded. They won Wimbledon doubles this year, and will play the U.S. Open.
According to the AP, Safarova and Strycova were not even meant to be playing together at the Olympics, with Strycova being a late replacement for Karolina Pliskova who withdrew from the tournament.
“The first set, especially, was extremely tricky”, Williams said, referring to the wind, “but I’m glad it kind of slowed down in the second a little bit, so I was able to produce better tennis”.
The world number one said: “It was a really tough match for us, a really tough draw, but we’re used to tough draws”.
“I don’t know why”.
Although it was a shock to many, Serena and Venus did take two years off from competitive play as doubles partners.
The fans couldn’t seem to settle on which woman they wanted to win. Then she changed course, unconvincingly.
Questions had been raised of 36-year-old Venus, who had been knocked out of the women’s singles the day before by Kirsten Flipkens after suffering from a virus that had limited her performance on the night.
The U.S. women’s coach said Venus was not really in condition as she lost her singles match prior this match.

On Saturday night, Venus’ availability for doubles was put in doubt by USA women’s tennis coach Mary Joe Fernandez, who said the four-time gold medalist and seven-time Grand Slam champion had cramping, dehydration and an upset stomach following a first-round loss in singles. With the start of Olympics 2016, he has tweeted all the updates of Serena and her sister Venus’ progress, making sure that he stays on top of tennis news from afar.
