McCallin was given a warm send off to Brazil by the residents of her home village of Dry Doddington as they packed the green to wave Union Flags and send her a good-luck video message.

Great Britain’s goalkeeper Maddie Hinch saves a penalty from Netherland’s Maartje Paumen during the gold medal match at the Rio Olympic Games.

The faster, quick-breaking Dutch restored their lead for a second time through van Male after a well-worked penalty corner had caught the British defence cold. And she duly delivered. The whole of Pelicans Hockey Club in Lynn was rooting for Team GB.

Skelton, who helped Britain win team gold at London 2012, was one of only two riders to have three clear rounds, and his winning time on Big Star in the jump-off was enough to win the title.

“I am glad we are making our nation proud in penalties at last – but we have done well as a team in them for a while”, she said.

The most feeling I think is relief.

On Day 14 of the 2016 Rio Olympics, the women’s field hockey finals will be held as both the bronze medal match and gold medal match will be played at Olympic Hockey Centre.

Despite winning every game to finish top of their group, however, the top-ranked Dutch team only scraped into the final after beating ninth-ranked Germany 4-3 in a shootout following a 1-1 draw. “We all just keep looking at each other and going what happened, what on earth just happened? We will cherish this for the rest of our lives”, said Kate Richardson-Walsh.

The medal matches of the women’s Olympic hockey competition take place on Friday 19th August, with Germany and New Zealand doing battle for bronze at 12:00 Brasilia Time (GMT / UTC -3).

“It’s a dream come true to reach an Olympic final, something we have trained for and we have the experience of being in the final”.

Meanwhile there was joy for the women’s track team as Team GB won their first Olympic 4×100 metres medal in more than three decades, breaking the national record en route to bronze. “Shame it’s silver”, she added, gesturing to the medal which will join the two gold ones she already has at home.

“They are defending champions, we’re trying to make history and we’ve got huge confidence in shuttles”. Despite having 16 shots on goal to Germany’s five, the New Zealand were outplayed by their opponents, who were more lively and more clinical in and around the attacking circle.

In an ironic twist, Caldas coached the Dutch women to the gold medal at the London Olympics. The more the crowd booed the more I knew she would score.

Captain Kate Richardson-Walsh, who has been leading the side since 2003 and who with this win is bowing out of worldwide hockey, was proud of team.

“We played them in Holland this year in a practice match and also won so we have a little bit of history”.

Lily Owsley, the GB forward, said: “We owe so much to her”.

The incident comes after US gold medallist Ryan Lochte and three team mates said they were robbed by armed men carrying police badges while travelling to the Athletes’ Village in a taxi in the early hours of the morning after a party.
