India ended Day 1 of Rio Olympics 2016 on a disappointing note after none of the players returned with a medal in the three events that offered nine medals on Saturday.

The silver went at 192kg and bronze at 188kg as Sopita Tanasan of Thailand captured the gold with a total lift of 200kg.

Sri Wahyuni Agustiani of Indonesia clinched the silver with 192 kilograms while Japan’s Hiromi Miyake (188 kilograms) took the bronze. Her first attempt, an 82 kg bar, did not end well as she lost her footing but redeemed herself with an excellent lift in the next one.

Chanu earned her Olympic berth in the Rio 2016 Olympics ticket after breaking the national record in the Olympics trials held in Patiala and was in with a chance for a medal going by current form.

It wasn’t easy. The Brazilian volunteers and fans stood firmly behind Chanu whenever she came on to the platform for her attempts.

In snatch, Mirabai got only her second attempt correct out of the three chances.

Mirabai failed to lift 104kg in her first attempt in clean and jerk, followed by two more attempts to pick up 106kg. Okoeva, growin in confidence, delivered a 97 kg lift in the second try to better her total (169 kg) while Ranaivosoa was unsuccessful in her attempt to lift 98 kg, thereby reducing her chances of a medal significantly. She failed to lock in the jerk and could not make it.

From the snatch, she went into clean and jerk with a 82kg score.
