Rio medalist, ’09 US Open champ del Potro has USTA wild card

“I had to fight unbelievably hard tonight”, the tennis star told the BBC of his almost four-hour match against Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro. Emotionally it was tough, physically it was hard with so many ups and downs in the match.

Murray said: “I did well in Montreal and Cincy but I just didn’t have enough time off”.

Still, the match was a fitting conclusion to a wonderful tennis tournament in Rio.

Fresh off his Olympic silver medal, 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro will return to Flushing Meadows for the first time in three years after receiving a wild-card invitation from the U.S. Tennis Association on Tuesday.

In the bronze-medal match, Kei Nishikori won Japan’s first Olympic tennis medal in nearly a century when he defeated Nadal, despite the tired Spaniard mounting a stirring mid-match fightback.

Murray, who has now won his last 18 matches since the grass-court season began in June, cut a exhausted figure after withstanding a raucous atmosphere and Del Potro’s powerful groundstrokes to deliver a four-set win on a giddying day for Team GB here.

So here’s del Potro looking in a bit of pain.

“It’s an incredible achievement what he’s done and he’s not going to stop there”, he told BBC Scotland. Andre de Grasse of Canada took the bronze. Djokovic was defeated in straight sets 6-7 6-7 as the Argentine made his way to the semi-final, where met Rafael Nadal. With the silver, Williams still tied the Olympic mark with her fifth medal: Kathleen McKane also won five (one gold) in the 1920s.

Here’s Murray despairing at how long it’s taking.

Perhaps that’s why he loves the Olympics so much, the chance to be just one of the team, rather than the team.

CAS ruled that Klishina was eligible to compete because she fulfilled the requirements set by the IAAF.
