Rio Olympic athletes will be swimming in filth

“I feel so happy qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games”. Russia’s head swim coach Sergei Kolmogorov told Russian agency R-Sport that swimmers barred from the games, including world 100-meter breaststroke champion Yulia Efimova, were at a pre-Olympic training camp in Brazil in the hope of a late reprieve to allow them to race in Rio.

TO BE CLEAR, we are NOT implying these athletes could simply jump into other sports without any sort of training.

On June 17, the IAAF Council ruled it was still too early to restore ARAF’s (All-Russia Athletics Federation) membership in the worldwide organization subsequently extending the suspension of Russian athletes from all global tournaments, including the 2016 Olympic Games.

Earlier this week, the International Associations of Athletics Federations upheld a full suspension of the Russian track delegation in light of overwhelming evidence of state-sponsored doping.

Olympic champion pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva and world champion hurdler Sergey Shubenkov are among 67 of the 68-strong athletics team to have been banned by the International Athletics Federation (IAAF).

Rio was the 26 and final state through which the torch was carried before the opening of the Olympics, which will be held on August 5.

Three further cyclists are under investigation and may also be unable to compete in Rio, due to pending doping cases. “Clearly, the absence of Russian athletes, who were leaders in some of the sports, will affect the competition”.

“Of course, just a few days before the Games start there are always a number of issues to be solved”.

In another worry for organizers, Rio metro employees threatened Thursday to go on strike on the eve of the Games if they do not get a 9.83 percent salary raise, raising the possibility of transport chaos for some 500,000 tourists expected to attend. Worldwide sports federations must now remove any athlete previously banned for doping or who was implicated in last week’s McLaren report alleging a mass cover up of failed drug tests. In his native Germany, IOC President Thomas Bach is facing increasing criticism for failing to impose a complete ban on Russia’s team.
