Rio Olympic village branded unsanitary by Belarus

Rio mayor Eduardo Paes had tried to comfort the Australian team by saying he wanted to arrange for a kangaroo to welcome them in the village.

The Olympic team of Belarus has branded the athletes’ village in Rio de Janeiro unsanitary, a day after Australia refused to check its athletes in over health concerns. USA cyclist Tejay van Garderen withdrew from Olympic consideration because of the potential effects Zika infection could have on his pregnant wife. Rory McIlroy, Vijay Singh and Jordan Spieth are among a group of golfers who have announced they will not take part.

“I’m not sure what’s more depressing, the fact this stuff is happening to foreigners so close to the Olympic Games or the fact that Brazilians have to live in a society that enables this … on a daily basis”.

“Yes, Zika is an epidemic”.

“We will evaluate this situation with International Olympic Committee and Rio 2016 after the Games”, Chief of Mission Maurits Hendriks, said in a statement issued on Sunday night. “The resources were made available”. “It’s a public health crisis”, said Lewnard. Though the virus is often mild, it has been linked to neurological disorders and birth defects in cases where pregnant women become infected. The disease is associated with microcephaly, a congenital disorder marked by a smaller-than-average head, as well as Guillain-Barre syndrome, an autoimmune condition. The Zika virus does not hang around in a person’s body forever.

The findings support the stance of the World Health Organisation (WHO) which says the 2016 Olympics will not significantly alter the global spread of Zika and that there is no reason to cancel or change the location of the Games. Also, most travelers will stay in screened and air-conditioned lodgings, further reducing their potential exposure to mosquitoes.

Over 10,000 athletes from a record number of countries will participate in the 2016 summer Olympics. This is the selling point of the Olympic village, perhaps, because of fears of sexually transmitting the Zika virus.

Caplan was one of the signatories to a letter in May that urged the World Health Organization to pressure Olympics officials to move or postpone the Games because of Zika. Ri0 2016 said that 630 workers have been sent to make repairs and ensure everything is checked for safety. “I personally wouldn’t feel anxious at all about going down there”.

(Viremia simply means the presence of a virus in the body). And, that will influence their decision to attend and their actions while there, said Stephen Higgs, director of the Biosecurity Research Institute at Kansas State University. “What Rio have done to create the facility is awesome”, Shelley was quoted as saying by adelaidenow.com.au on Tuesday. “They’re not the people who are going to be in the back streets, where mosquito control isn’t being implemented as effectively as possible”. This is all to keep the cost of the Olympics low. Zika is risky for pregnant women for the birth defects it can cause.

Not to be outdone by the Canadians, members of the Dutch women’s hockey team got in amongst the Rio 2016 lettering for a team photo ahead of their title defence. The findings were published early online in Annals of Internal Medicine.
