Rio Olympics 2016: Australia’s Mack Horton wins men’s 400m freestyle

James Guy finished sixth in the men’s 400m freestyle final as he missed the chance to land a first medal for Team GB at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Italy’s Gabriele Detti roared home in the final 50 meters to capture bronze in 3:43.49.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Yang had tried to distract Horton by splashing him with water as the pair trained in the competition pool on Thursday.

The 20-year-old is the first Australian since Ian Thorpe in 2004 to win the Olympic 400m freestyle crown. Yang and Horton had been circumspect throughout the race, holding plenty in reserve for the final 100m.

“I don’t know if it’s a rivalry between me and him, just me and athletes who have tested positive”, Horton said.

He had qualified second fastest for this final behind the American Conor Dwyer and started slowly. You’ve got love this team.

The 24-year-old was previously banned from swimming for six months after being arrested for driving his Porsche without a license.

He has had problems out of the pool since London, serving a three-month ban in 2014 after testing positive for a banned stimulant and spending a week in jail for crashing a auto while driving without a licence.

Meanwhile, the 2012 London Games double Olympic swimming champion Ye Shiwen, who won the gold medal for the 200 meter and 400-meter medley, is believed to be not as strong as she was four years ago.
