Diuretics increase urination rates and can be used as “masking agents” to hide the presence of performance-enhancing substances that doping tests screen for.

Xinyi missed the bronze in the 100-meter butterfly by nine-hundredths of a second.

The announcement was reported yesterday by Xinhua, the official state news agency. Bulgarian television said the 33-year-old tested positive for the blood booster EPO.

Swimming prodigy Chen Xinyi, who won several gold medals at the 2014 Asian Games, reportedly tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide, a banned drug, Reuters reported. She tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide, CAS said in a statement.

Adrian failed a test in Poland before the Games, Michal Rynkowski, director of Poland’s Commission Against Doping in Sport, told reporters in Warsaw. That decision has sparked complaints from several swimmers, most notably American Lilly King.
