RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) – Britain was thoroughly outplayed, yet weathered everything the star-studded Netherlands team could muster. The game finished 3-3 at full-time, with Hinch producing a string of eye-catching saves to ensure that the Netherlands, the defending Olympic champions, did not run away with the contest.

Richardson-Walsh made history by winning gold in the same team as her wife Helen Richardson-Walsh, who scored in the shootout, which made victory all the sweeter.

“It would be really special [to win gold]”.

“We don’t expect to win”.

The coach of the Dutch team, Alyson Annan, was only woman trainer at the hockey tournament.

The Dutch captain Maartej Paumen was disappointed after the defeat: “I think we played a really good game. We will take that confidently into the next game, debrief, and off we go”.

“Tactically we were strong; technically we were strong”. Physically, mentally, we were the better team. “That makes it much more disappointing”.

In guaranteeing silver, Britain set up a clash against the Netherlands, the world No 1 side, thanks to an Alex Danson brace and penalty from Helen Richardson-Walsh.

As a result of Spain finishing higher than them in men’s Pool A but losing to Argentina in the quarter-finals, Australia’s men are placed one lower than Spain, who are classified fifth.

The report comes after USA gold medallist Ryan Lochte and three team mates said they were robbed by armed men carrying police badges while travelling to the Athletes’ Village in a taxi in the early hours of the morning after a party. We knew the Dutch would have their moments because they are a fantastic side. But Great Britain was able to create some scoring chances in the fourth period, and Nicola White’s goal on a penalty corner with a little over eight minutes remaining in regulation tied the score at three goals apiece.

Britain held on for a shootout – where players take it in turn having 30 seconds to score one on one.

The Netherlands attacked hard from the beginning, as usual.

A first-half penalty from Maartje Paumen was superbly saved by Hinch and soon after Lily Owsley gave Great Britain the lead with a poacher’s finish. Britain came back three minutes later when Owsley tapped one in off a rebound.

The early stages of the second quarter continued in the same vein as the first, before Great Britain converted their second penalty corner of the match to take the lead.
