The best use for cupping, Rummage said, is for “anything that’s painful, inflammation, muscle tension, bruising”.

The final may be the last time they face off for Olympic gold in this event. “So, I think we have to be careful we don’t do a blanket endorsement – we don’t have enough evidence for that – but I don’t think we should throw out the baby with the bathwater just because the ideal studies haven’t been completed yet”, Brent Bauer, director of Mayo Clinic said.

With the win, Phelps tied the record of the most individual Olympic titles set by Leonidas of Rhodes. He cruised through his heat with the third-fastest time overall, 1 minute, 58.41 seconds, which trailed only American teammate Ryan Lochte (1:57.38) and Germany’s Philip Heintz (1:57.59).

In the men’s 200 backstroke, Evgeny Rylov of Russian Federation posted the fastest semifinal time at 1:54.45, followed by Australia’s Mitch Larkin and a pair of American swimmers, Jacob Pebley and 100 backstroke champion Ryan Murphy.

It was perhaps the 200m butterfly gold medal that was of most significance to him, given that he was defeated in the event four years ago at the London Games. Canada took the bronze in 7:45.39.

“I am really looking forward to it, I can’t wait”, Bronte said. “Any time I get up and race him, it’s the best”. He’s also got a chance to pull off that feat in the 100 butterfly.

Just more than an hour after the race Phelps, 31, picked up the 25th Olympic medal – 21st gold – of his career in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

It has been another incredible Olympics for Phelps, who already has added three gold medals to his career total. “It’s the best thing I can do for my country”.

In other events Wednesday afternoon, world-record holder Cate Campbell of Australia was top qualifier in the 100 freestyle with an Olympic-record time of 52.78.
