Rio Olympics 2016 Kicks Off With Jazzy Opening Ceremony

Rio is one hour later than Eastern time. In 2012, England wanted us to know that it was a richer, more lavish country than we might imagine.

Brazil made a decision to break with tradition and host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic Games at Rio’s legendary Maracana Stadium, instead of holding the events at the Olympic Stadium, as customary.

Gil is credited for helping revolutionize Brazilian music in the 1960s.

The locals certainly seemed to enjoy the show, based on the swinging hips of the Brazilian athletes as they entered the stadium and the fans in the stands, who sang at the top of their lungs.

The creative force behind the ceremonies, Brazilian film director Fernando Meirelles, admitted that his goal was to produce a show that would be “a drug for depression” for his countrymen. Unless a miracle can preserve the bodies of these once-in-a-generation athletes, a gaping hole in Olympic sponsorship deals will need filling at future games. But it was an honest statement. Germany will be represented by 423 athletes. In the end I feel good that I am not spending money that Brazil hasn’t got.

In addition to the 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley, the 31-year-old will compete in the 200m butterfly in Rio.

From the rainforest, performers acting as immigrants from Portugal in the 1500s moved in, manning ships that rolled across the stadium’s floor.

Can I just say this?

Retired former World No. 1 tennis player Gustavo Kuerten, also known as Guga, kicked off the cauldron relay, handed over the torch to the world’s great female basketball player Hortencia Marcari.

The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio have begun with the opening ceremony in Brazil Friday, but some American viewers are more frustrated than excited.

Bach, however, said the Games were a “catalyst for transforming Rio into a modern metropolis that is even more lovely than before”, while Nuzman said he was the “proudest man alive” that his city had got this far. According to a Reuters report, police used tear gas to quell a small group of protesters near Maracana Stadium who were burning a Brazilian flag shortly before the start of the show. Temer is serving in his job only because president Dilma Rousseff is awaiting an impeachment hearing.

The usual global fashion show was a kick to watch. Athletes from Cameroon wore traditional flowing robes, those from communist-led Cuba had outfits fashioned by a French luxury footwear designer; those from Australia wore seersuckers and shorts, as if preparing for an afternoon of yachting. Getting an equally warm reception was Tonga, led by shirtless, oiled-up taekwondo athlete Pita Taufatofua.

He is also expected to be a part of the U.S. relay team.

The U.S. athletes came out at 9:30 p.m. wearing white trousers, blue blazers and striped shirts, led by superstar swimmer Michael Phelps. Brazil, with its reputation for wealth disparity, wants us to know that it’s not the kind of country that spends more than it needs to on superficial ceremonies like this. However, legendary footballer Pele, who was widely expected to light the Olympic cauldron, pulled out a few hours before due to ill-health.

Even in Vanderlei de Lima’s triumphal finale there was disenchantment.

De Lima endeared himself to the world at the 2004 Games when he didn’t let a race-spoiling interference get him down. That concluded an evening with a strong environmental theme built around sustainable forests and water.

His late withdrawal was a painful reminder of Rio’s inability to fall in the love with the games so far.

That never really happened. Which partially explains the protests that were taking place near the stadium. But the show went on inside.

For one night, you could do that.

Over the next 16 days returning heroes like Usain Bolt, Serena Williams and Michael Phelps will try to hold that gold standard once more. Only Brazil’s team, which marched last, drew a louder roar from the crowd than the refugees.

They, too, danced around the track.
