Rio Olympics 2016 medal table: Team USA adds two gold

Simone Biles won another gold medal on Day 9, doing so in the women’s vault. No other country besides the US has reached 20 medals in single place yet. The 21-year-old Murphy captured the bronze in the event Monday night. He’s the first runner to successfully defend his 800-meter Olympic title since 1964.

Greece earned a gold medal in men’s gymnastics when Eleftherios Petrounias won the rings competition, finishing ahead of Arthur Zanetti in second for Brazil and Denis Ablyazin of Russian Federation in third.

The U.S. men’s volleyball team is through to the quarterfinals after a three-set win over Mexico in their final preliminary round match. The United States set the Olympic record with 83 total medals in the 1984 Summer Olympics. What they’d go for on the open market is much higher, easily $10,000 or more, but that’s not a factor unless an athlete sells or otherwise disposes of the medal, according to tax expert Blake Christian, partner at Holthouse Carlin & Van Trigt. While there’s still a week left at the Games, the USA has built a seemingly insurmountable lead in the medal count. The U.S. finished first in gold and bronze medals, and China and Russian Federation finished first and second in silver medals, with the U.S.in third. Great Britain on 30 medals (15 Gold, 16 Silver, 7 Bronze) overtook China on 45 (15 Gold, 13 Silver, 17 Bronze) to claim the second position on the medal tally.

And one Briton already has a gold medal today: sailor Giles Scott has an unassailable lead in the Finn class and will confirm gold just by starting the final race.

The U.S. women’s basketball team hits the court Tuesday to begin the knockout round.

Medaling takes at least some sting out of Felix’s disappointment from not making the U.S. team in the 200, her marquee event. The women’s 200 also gets under way along with men’s 400 hurdles.
