In Barra da Tijuca, close to the Olympic Park, commerce was up 30 percent.

But Sunday served up tough weather conditions for such a big party.

The athletes braved harsh winter winds, accompanied by torrential showers, and enjoyed the festive atmosphere after intense competition in their respective events ended.

The Rio Games welcomed the debut of a refugees team.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) handed over the Olympic flag to the governor of Japan’s capital city Tokyo, which will host the next edition of the Games in four years.

Rio TV ratings may have tumbled for NBC, but livestreaming brought in more viewers than ever.

Performers take part in the closing ceremony.

On Sunday, there was an ode to the white-clad lacemaking ladies and the forro music of the northeast that sparked waves of pride among Brazilians. Among all athletes, from all countries, across all sports, only Phelps had more.

“The world has recognised that the time has come for Brazil!”

Because the Rio Olympics showed the world that we too have come a long way. “I feel extremely honoured and proud that I get to win a gold medal in the Olympic Games”.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: The United States rallied from a two-set deficit against Russian Federation in volleyball on Sunday to win the Olympic bronze medal with a 3-2 victory.

Out of the 121 USA medals, 61 of them were brought home by female athletes, while the men took 55 (another five came from mixed events).

And the margin between first and second in the overall medals race this year tops all others (the boycotted games of 1980 and 1984 excluded) since the Americans won 67 more medals than Italy did at the 1932 Los Angeles Games.

But Lochte’s story quickly unraveled, enraging Brazilians and Americans alike.

Globally, the Rio Olympics will go down as the game changer in mobility viewing. “I had to overcome a lot of obstacles”.

Rio now has less than three weeks to prepare for Paralympics, the pinnacle of the disability sport calendar.

“We are in a hard moment as a country right now, we can’t hide that, but the Games were scheduled and I’m glad we could enjoy them”, said Alessandro Freitas, also from Rio.

“From the point of view of the lives of ordinary people in Rio, it was not a successful Games”.

The run-up to the Games, an unrivalled moment to showcase Brazil’s most picturesque city, was dominated instead by headlines over the impeachment of Lula’s successor, Dilma Rousseff, the spread of Zika, and resurgent crime levels in the city’s slums due to rising unemployment and under-funded police.

Interim President Michel Temer, who was booed at the opening ceremony, decided not to attend the closing event.

The United States topped the medal standings, matching their 46 golds from London four years ago ahead of Britain, who sealed a surprise second place ahead of China with 27 golds to 26. Plans to leverage that success could include a head-to-head competition with the U.S. Olympic team.
