There are now 60 million refugees around the world and this is the first time a team of refugees are competing in Olympics.

Day 1 of the event saw Ginny Thrasher, a 19-year-old shooting competitor from America in the women’s air rifle event win a gold medal as she outshined two Chinese competitors, Du Li and Yi Siling.

There are 14 golds up for grabs, including four swimming finals and the women’s side of a grueling road cycling race completed by the men on Saturday.

6/13 Virginia Thrasher became the fist athlete to pick up a gold Medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics as she scored 208 points in the 10m Air rifle competition.

The event will start at 9:45 a.m. with a subdivision that includes 41-year-old Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan, who will be competing in her seventh Olympics, a record for a gymnast.

The real drama will surround which of the three American women doing the all-around – Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman – will miss out on the final.

After a less-than-stellar showing by Venus Williams in Rio, the Williams sisters have been eliminated from the doubles competition and Venus has been eliminated from singles play as well after losing to Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium on Saturday, Day 1 of singles play.

3/13 Brazil’s historic Marcana stadium was filled to the rim with excited fans ready to witness the Rio 2016 Olympic Opening Ceremony. Should she make it to the finals, it’ll be special, but either way, there’s no shortage of talent in women’s tennis in Rio and the finals will be worth a watch as will the quarter and semi finals, taking place on Wednesday and Thursday the 10th and 11th. The stands were almost full with cheering fans when the US women’s gymnastics team took the floor for preliminaries on Sunday.

Now, they’ll face Colombia in their final Group G matchup before the quarterfinals begin on Friday, Aug. 12.

History will be made as USA team member Ibtihaj Muhammad becomes the first American to compete in the Olympics wearing a hijab.

Here’s five things to keep an eye on at the Rio Olympics.

“You see, on the other hand, also a very good atmosphere, the Cariocas (Rio residents) now they embrace the Games, they come to the Olympic Park, they enjoy the competitions and the Olympic atmosphere”.

In addition to Atlantic Avenue, the street that runs along Copacabana Beach, and other areas in Rio’s most emblematic district, security will also be reinforced at the Santos Dumont airport, the newly-reconfigured facility that is one of the main legacies of the city’s hosting of the Olympic Games.

And, at the end of the night, at 11:38 p.m. the men’s 4×200 meter freestyle relay starts. While the men’s team shouldn’t have much (any) trouble handling Venezuela in their match on Monday, seeing some of the world’s best players on the court together is still worth a look.
