In Rio, the US women shined with 61 of 121 medals, including 27 out of 46 golds (59 percent). Plus, the women won 27 gold, which is more than any other country’s female athletes. It is also very much present in the legacy that the Games will leave for the residents of the host city.

The U.S. women’s 4×400 meter relay team members, Courtney Okolo, Natasha Hastings, Phyllis Francis and Allyson Felix celebrate their gold medals on the podium during athletics competitions at the Summer Olympics inside Olympic stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Saturday.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe dressed as the video-game character Mario to accept the honor before performers from his homeland danced around fluorescent-lit cubes and executed gravity-defying flips, offering a glimpse of what is to come four years from now.

OTHER: The Paralympics will go ahead next month despite being forced to implement further “major budget cuts” to the games in Rio de Janeiro. “It was like war”.

For the men, Phelps added five more gold medals and one bronze to his resume.

Bolt, 29, made history when he sealed the sprint “triple triple” in his final Games, his third consecutive 100m, 200m and 4x100m sweep.

And 10 teams – including the independent team – won their first golds, including Monica Puig in women’s tennis for Puerto Rico.
