Rio Olympics Day 11 – Boxing, sailing and more for Irish competitors

The World Champion lost Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin in their Bantamweight quarter-final in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday afternoon.

The third round began at frenetic pace as both boxers moved in close to exchange quick blows, but the judges plumped for a unanimous decision in favour of the Russian to end Ireland and Conlan’s hopes in the boxing. “My dream’s been shattered now”. But you know what, I have a big career ahead of me.

“I’m looking forward to him bringing me to the Olympic gold medal and my father being in my corner”. I would advise anybody not to compete for the AIBA (Amateur International Boxing Association). I had to go to his fight, which I did, outfought him and they were just being a bit.

“I think we hit a home run with Billy”, Michael Martino, executive director of USA Boxing, said of Billy Walsh. It’s a shambles. I don’t care what I am saying.

Calling the judges “cheating b.rds” immediately after, Conlan said “My Olympic title was robbed from me there”.

Incredibly it was the Russians hand raised as the victor when the fight was over and even more astonishingly – on a unanimous decision.

Only the O’Donovan brothers, Paul and Gary, have made the podium – the Cork siblings won silver in the men’s double lightweight sculls last Friday and they were in the Riocentro Pavilion 6 today to roar Conlan on, along with the boxer’s young daughter Luisne and his partner, Shauna.
