Rio Olympics: Dream Team succumb to German power

Germany are guaranteed their best ever finish at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament, while Nigeria will look to add to their history of medals at the tournament when they go for bronze against Honduras in Belo Horizonte on Saturday.

Germany and Brazil will kick off at Maracana Stadium at 4:30 p.m. ET Saturday.

Brazil defeated Honduras 6-0 earlier in the day at Maracana to put the hosts in the final.

Germany continued to get in behind the Nigerian defence and it took goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel to make a big save off Sven Bender who was left free six yards out from a Germany freekick.

Nigeria, captained by Chelsea’s Mikel John Obi, responded by almost equalising following a mistake by Germany goalkeeper Timo Horn, but the Cologne No.1 made up for his mistake by blocking Sadiq Umar’s subsequent shot.

Nils Peterson finally got the victor for Germany in the 89th minue, four minutes after coming in for Maximilian Meyer.

The German women’s national team is also playing in the gold-medal match against Sweden on Friday, marking the first time a nation has had both its men and women in a soccer final at the same Olympics.

A quiet second half ended with a second goal from superb Nils Peterson, tapping home a pass from David Selke. During the match the Germans broke through on goal 20 times (10 in the target) and converted this advantage in the four goals scored – distinguished gnabry, Ginter, Zeljko and Max. He has shown how good he is with his two goals and his all-round performance in the football event so far. The team confidently rolled over Denmark 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

He said, “For every game we want to play, we prepare to win”. And the 21-year-old was on target once again in the quarterfinals, opening the scoring as his side beat Portugal by a surprisingly emphatic 4-0 margin.
