Rio Olympics get ratings bump, still down from 2012 games

Five times a world champion but without a single medal from three previous Olympics, Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu finally struck gold yesterday morning (Singapore time), demolishing the 400 metres individual medley world record in the process.

“When I looked around and saw the time, I was over the moon”, said O’Connor. DiRado, who is making her Olympic debut in Rio, previously announced she would retire at the conclusion of the Games to kick start her career as a business analyst in Atlanta.

Italy won the most fencing medals at London 2012 with three golds and seven in total, and will likely be strong contenders again.

The husband and wife have a well-known turbulent relationship and the commentary received online criticism targeted at Hicks, for congratulating a man for the hard work of a woman, that just fucking broke her own world record.

“I was already very relaxed before the 400IM which was surprising for me”, said Hosszu, who arrived in Rio in search of her first Olympic medal.

It’s been an impressive run for Baker, who swims for the University of California-Berkeley.

Hungarian Katinka Hosszu came into this 200 individual medley as the prohibited favorite, despite posting the second-fastest time in qualifying behind Great Britain’s Siobhan Marie-O’Connor. Like with Friday’s opening ceremony, it was a smaller audience than for the London Games in 2012 (which had 27.3 million viewers for the corresponding night).

“I think my jaw was just.” and Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe opened her mouth wide, mimicking her astonishment.

She faded in the closing stages on Monday to finish seventh. The Trib tweeted about her medal. “Coming into Rio, I wanted to take it like any other meet”.

“The adrenaline is going so hard for me right now, I don’t even feel exhausted just because I’m so excited”.

Hosszu dropped out of the 200 butterfly during the afternoon preliminaries, wanting to put her full energy into a race that encompasses all three strokes.

The Chicagoist complained that an unnamed NBC announcer “described Team USA’s excited huddle post dominating the gymnastics qualifying round as appearing as if the women ‘might as well be standing in the middle of a mall,’ instead of, you know, having just crushed the competition by an insane margin”.

And she’s not done yet. Her opinion counts. Coventry swam in a heat of the 100 backstroke Sunday afternoon, as did Hosszu.

“Katinka is having a fantastic meet”, said American rival Katie Ledecky, victor of three medals, including two golds.
