While the spotlight was on the 31-year-old, who retired after the 2012 London Games before returning for one last hurrah, the U.S. women’s 4x100m medley relayers captured their country’s 1,000th Olympic medal. Australia earned silver, while Denmark took bronze.

The U.S. has won 33 swimming medals at Rio 2016, its most since 33 at the Sydney Games in 2000.

Sugar Land’s Simone Manuel won another gold medal, anchoring the 4×100 medley relay, and she scored a silver medal in the 50m freestyle.
