The IOC must now rubber-stamp the decision at its session in Rio de Janeiro in August.

The inclusion of the new sports would add 18 events and 474 athletes to the Olympic programme in Tokyo, without impacting existing sports.

UNHCR also said that the participation of a refugee team in the Olympics represents a major milestone in its long-standing partnership with the IOC.

A source close to the International Olympic Committee stressed that the amount of money given to the local organising committee had not changed.

We will offer them a home in the Olympic Village together with all the athletes of the world.

The IOC said the testing will also target sports that WADA has declared “most affected” by doping.

“I can’t recall an executive board meeting with so many issues on the agenda”, International Olympic Committee vice-president Craig Reedie told The Associated Press.

“Today’s news is especially hard as it affects both the Olympic Athletic Community I am part of – and someone I love deeply”, the statement said.

While the organization did not give names or what disciplines the athletes were in, it said they came from three different sports.

In a request last month, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen asked WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan to evaluate whether the Rio games this year should be delayed or postponed.

“The IOC will not hesitate to punish anyone within its reach responsible for using or providing doping products or methods, including officials, coaches and other members of the athlete’s entourage”.

“We want to make sure any targeted athletes who have a positive result will be stopped from competing in Rio, ” IOC spokesman Mark Adams said.

He says several leading athletes, including Usain Bolt, Rafael Nadal and members of the USA basketball team, have said they have no worries about going to Rio.

Rio officials told the IOC executive board they’ve sold 67 percent of Olympic tickets, or 4 million out of the 6 million available.

“It is unlikely to be resolved by the time of the Games in Rio”.

“The sport’s inclusion would raise interest in the Olympics among young people”.

With less than two months before the August 5 opening ceremony in Rio, Brazilian organizers are delivering a report to the International Olympic Committee executive board.
