Rio Paralympics: Nigeria adds two more gold medals

In sharp contrast, Mariyappan Thangavelu and Varun Singh Bhati, who won gold and bronze medals, respectively, at the Rio Paralympics, have received a muted response-only the sports ministry, the Tamil Nadu and UP governments have offered them cash rewards.

Rio de Janeiro, Sept. 12 (CNA) Taiwanese powerlifter Lin Tzu-hui (林資惠) won the country’s first medal at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro Monday, a bronze in the women’s under-79 kilogram group.

“This is my greatest achievement in the Paralympics”.

The country won two more gold medals and one bronze to take its tally to five gold medals, two silver and one bronze.

This is stated on the official website of the Paralympics. Nigeria leads the whole of Africa, Tunisia is second at 11th Position. Nigerian athletes have won six of their seven medals so far in powerlifting, which sees athletes within a certain weight category bench press.

Iranian athletes have so far clinched four medals – one gold and three silvers – putting the Islamic Republic in the 32nd slot of the medal count table.

Also, Nwosu claimed the fifth gold medal for Nigeria when she lifted 140kg in the women’s -73kg of the Powerlifting event.

Her first throw of 7.83m bettered the former record of 7.72m. Two silver medals also came in powerlifting courtesy of Esther Onyema and Latifat Tijani, while Nnamdi Innocent collected bronze in the 72kg men’s category.
