Rio Paralympics: Nigeria win more gold medals

Paralympic cyclist Jon-Allan Butterworth has said he hopes to inspire people to “follow their dreams” after becoming the first British serviceman or woman injured in Iraq or Afghanistan to win Paralympic gold.

Mariappan repeated the feat at the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics while teammate Cheok Kon Fatt went one better by winning a silver medal, also in powerlifting and Mohd Khasseri Othman contributed another bronze from athletics.

Lin said she felt slightly panicked after her first attempt of 121 kg was disqualified, but she managed to calm herself before her successful second attempt.

The 30-year-old from Sutton Coldfield was a weapons technician working in Basra when he was caught in a rocket attack and had to have his left arm amputated as a result of his injuries.

Butterfield, from Glasgow, has been supported by the charity Help for Heroes through its Sports Recovery programme, which provides military athletes with an introduction to Paralympic sport.

Champions of Paralympics Games have become: Leilia Adzhametova in the women’s 100 metres run, Roman Polianskyi in rowing, Oleksii Fedyn in the 100 metres brace swimming, Denys Dubrov in the 200 metres swimming and Natalia Kosmina in table tennis. “If you know what you can do, then why worry?”

“The fact that we broke the world record in the heats, we knew there were a few little things we could tweak and we just got it all right in that last ride”.

Jayne Kavanagh, performance pathway manager at Help for Heroes, said: “We know that sport plays a big part in the recovery journey, providing a sense of confidence and goal as well as improving general wellbeing”. I’ve proven it in the past. “I was throwing further in training than the gold medal victor for the past four months”.

Nigerian athletes have won 5 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze, at the Rio 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Ridzuan won the gold medal in the men’s 100m (T36) two days ago.

One hour later and the mixed coxed four team of Pamela Relph, James Fox, Daniel Brown and Grace Clough, plus cox Oliver James, made it three golds and one bronze from four finals.
