Brazil’s federal government must provide financial support to Rio de Janeiro state that’s on the verge of bankruptcy in order to avoid the shame of a disappointing Olympics, according to a top official in the administration of Acting President Michel Temer.

But some transportation experts are concerned that there may not be enough time to finish the expansion and conduct critical trial runs. While officials insist it can still be finished in time, frequent delays, skyrocketing costs and a financing snag have created doubts. “What guarantee do we have that such a sensitive and complicated project is in order?”. But no matter – we all know that the Olympic medals are worth infinitely more than their monetary expense or manufacturing process could ever dictate.

Paes said that the $2.08 billion budget has been financed nearly fully by the city and federal governments, and the city’s contribution has been financed mostly by private money. The state isn’t paying its teachers and retired workers or providing basic necessities to some government employees, like toilet paper at police stations.

Viewers are then treated to shots of recently arrived high-tech trams making their way through central Rio and aerial views of the new roads, tunnels and Bus Rapid Transit corridors that now criss-cross the Olympic city.

“Rio’s financial worries are notorious”. Besides, they are also seeking more information about plans to test the new line. “The subway is vital”.

“Its the way things work here, ” said Hivonete Reis, complaining about how long it has taken to expand the subway to the southern part of the city where she lives.
