Fans shouldn’t be too anxious: Ledecky set the world record in the event in January. Facing Brazilian Mariana Silva in the first round, Szogedi, also had to deal with a very partisan crowd shouting support for her opponent. Heats start at 1:02 p.m., with world record holder Federica Pellegrini of Italy going in the fourth and Ledecky in the fifth.
The third day of the men’s water polo tournament began in green-tinged water, though not almost as dark as the neighboring diving pool at the aquatics center. It’s a links-style layout stretching 7,128 yards and built in the hopes it can both challenge some of the world’s best in Rio and then grow the game in Brazil.

Later on Tuesday, Phelps looks to win gold medal No. 20 when he swims in the 200-meter butterfly against South African Chad le Clos, who beat Phelps in London; the US women’s gymnastics team goes for gold in the team competition; and Lochte is set to make his Rio debut in the preliminaries of the men’s 4×200-meter relay. Also on their schedule this week – Wednesday against Australia (6 p.m. ET), Friday against Serbia (6 p.m. ET) and finally, Sunday against France (1:15 p.m. ET). China’s Ma Long and Zhang Jike are both into the semifinals, and we’re sure to see how the subtleties of spin dictate the victor.
