The Charlotte violence unfolded as demonstrators in Tulsa, Oklahoma, called for the arrest of a police officer there who was seen in widely viewed videos shooting to death an unarmed black man who had his hands in clear view at the time.

Violence broke out in Charlotte, North Carolina for a second night on Wednesday as police confronted a repeat of clashes ignited by the fatal police shooting of a black man.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has blocked access to the area, which is about a mile from the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, as protesters gathered after the shooting.

After Scott was shot and killed, members of his family and protesters insisted that he had a book in the vehicle, not a handgun as police officers reported.

John Barnett, who runs a civil rights group called True Healing Under God, (THUG), warned releasing footage of Mr Scott’s shooting may be the only way for police to regain trust.

In the press conference, Putney said he is now focused on honoring a request from the Scott family to view the video, and appeared adamant about not releasing it publicly any time soon.

Charlotte Police Chief Kerr Putney told Fox News: “We’re trying to disperse the crowd”.

“My heart bleeds for what our great city is going through”, North Carolina Governor Pat McCory told CBS News affiliate station WBTV-TV about the two nights of violence. Such shootings have sparked huge protests recently.

The city originally said the victim died, but now says he is on life support.

The police stood silently for a time, then threw concussion grenades and tear gas canisters. CMPD confirmed that four officers were injured during Wednesday night’s protests, all experience injuries that were not life-threatening. “I can tell you we did not find a book”, the chief said.

Accounts differ over the shooting of Scott.

Police encountered Scott – who was not the person they were seeking – in a auto parked at the building.

A fellow civilian, not police, shot him, authorities said.

“Justice justifies everything”, one protester said.

Mr Scott was the third black man killed by police in a week, after a 13-year-old boy was shot dead in OH and Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black pastor, was killed in Oklahoma.
