Without naming any community, the RSS chief favoured a uniform population policy. “India is evolving in a new look, world is expecting India to show them the way ahead”.

“Two years ago, there was an atmosphere of despondency. A feeling of hope is there”, he said.

The RSS Sarsanghchalak, however, cautioned against the rising population in the country and stressed the need to stem its tide. Since time immemorial, our culture has respected diversity to establish unity…

As chief of an organisation that is the ideological fountainhead of the Modi Sarkar, Bhagwat saw an atmosphere of hope and enthusiasm in the country after Prime Minister Modi’s assumption of office. “We need to rise above vote bank politics to formulate a holistic approach, equally applicable to all citizens, towards the population policy”, he said.

He said that for prosperity and security, the government, administration and people must be on the same page, and “Hindutva could act as the common chord”.

The RSS chief stressed that the aim should be not just be material growth but spiritual growth.

Population growth can be an asset too.

“We have to guard against them”.

Recalling the United Nation’s social and economic proclamation made in 1951, the RSS leader said there was a sense that rapid economic progress was impossible without painful adjustments. During his nearly hour-long speech, Mr Bhagwat repeatedly called for a dialogue for settling contentious issues.

Apparently referring to the Rajasthan High Court’s recent ruling declaring “Santhara”, the Jain practice of voluntary fast-unto-death, as a punishable offence, a judgement which was later stayed by the Supreme Court, Bhagwat said, “There are Acharyas in every religion”.

“It can not be enforced by laws or government, but require efforts to tune the society’s psyche to it”, Bhagwat said.
