Rivera: LB Davis has surgery, expected to play in Super Bowl
It will be the first Super Bowl for Newton and the second trip to the big game for the Panthers (17-1), who lost to New England 12 years ago.

Despite the injury, Davis seems ready and eager to play in Super Bowl 50 against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.
We’ll see if Denver can slow down the Carolina train, but at this point it’s hard to see anyone doing that.
Prior to the season, the Panthers had less than a 3% chance to win the Super Bowl and weren’t even the favorite to win the NFC South division.
And one of his TD passes was an 86-yard catch-and-run by Philly Brown, helped by Rashad Johnson’s botched tackle.
The next time they had the ball the Panthers went 49 yards in five plays, scoring on a 22-yard run by Ted Ginn Jr., who covered about 55 yards on the play. Manning was sacked three times – not bad, considering Brady was being hammered throughout the game by the Broncos’ front seven, resulting in four sacks, 20 hits (season-high for any National Football League quarterback) and two picks.
But the rest of the Panthers secondary had question marks, especially after Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns while almost leading Seattle back from a 31-0 halftime deficit in the NFC divisional playoff round. On the next play from scrimmage, it was the leader of the Panthers defense that got his moment on center stage.
“I think those collard greens are brewing right now”, Newton said.
“It isn’t going to be instant grits, quick grits”, Newton said. “We’re not finished”, Newton said.
MVP frontrunner Cam Newton made a quantum leap in his fifth professional season, setting new career-bests with 35 touchdown passes, 10 interceptions and a 99.4 passer rating.
Reaching the Super Bowl was a goal for the Panthers, Newton said, but it wasn’t THE goal.
A few injuries to the Panthers defense could alter the line significantly as the status’ of Roman Harper and Thomas Davis is anyone’s guess. “I didn’t have to say anything…I really liked the way we were aggressive at the end of the game”.
Davis underwent surgery on his arm on Monday and want to be back in time for Carolina’s showdown with the Denver Broncos on February 7 in Santa Clara.

Standing in their way, however, are the Panthers who are coming off a dominant and statement victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
