Rivers of blood flow through Dhaka streets

The animal sacrifices are related to the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, according to CNN.

Photographs have emerged showing streets flowing red with blood after the annual animal sacrifices for Eid ul Adha. Usually a goat, sheep or a cow is killed to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s test of faith.

Resident Tareq Ahmed told the Dhaka Tribune: “Last year the city corporations launched a mass campaign to encourage people to use the designated spots and that caught our eyes”. So numerous almost 100,000 livestock sacrificed there this year were killed on the streets or at underground garages, according to BBC Bengali.

In Dhaka, however, this holy ceremony turned into a municipal apocalypse when the city encountered heavy rains following the sacrifices. Believers slaughter animals as a symbol of thanks to Allah for having spared Ishmael.

The two city corporations designated 1,000 areas – 496 in the north and 504 in the south – for slaughtering animals. Others said they could not get there because of the rain. Yesterday, large number of followers sacrificed animals as part of the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha.

‘To be honest, I was scared.

The meat is shared between family, friends and the poor, but the off-cuts and offal are discarded.

Saha said the sight of families wading into the red water made him “speechless”.

Flooding is a common occurrence because of the poor drainage systems in Dhaka, Bangladesh, an over-crowded city of 10 million people. They should also take care of the rights of animals.
