RM2.6b won’t make Malaysia beholden to Middle East donors, minister insists

A RM2.6 billion donation from the Middle-East will not influence Malaysia, as countries in that region are not as strong as the United States, said Umno supreme council member Nazri Abdul Aziz.

“Of course, that’s the only way to bring the money back up”, he said when asked if the sliding ringgit value has benefited Malaysia’s tourism industry.

“Like in the US, when they received donations, it would be registered”.

Kuala Lumpur (dpa) – Millions of dollars put in the bank accounts of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak came from a “brotherly nation”, a minister said Tuesday, in the latest twist to a scandal surrounding the premier. “They are also nations that are not stronger than us”.

“This is just a brotherly nation which wants to see certain parties win in the general election because we are friendly to them”, he said. “There is demand”, he explained at the sidelines of the Declaration of National Heritage at the National Museum today.

“So now I support that we do have laws whoever donate must donate to the central party account and give your name”, he said. “Where the hell did you get the money from?”

“Compared to taking donations in cash or putting it in a Swiss Bank, this is more transparent”.

Najib is under scrutiny for the RM 2.6 billion transferred to his accounts between 2013 and early this year.

Referring to donations to political parties, Nazri said when he was the law minister there was a suggestion by the ruling government to make sure all donations were recorded and given to their respective headquarters, but the opposition objected.

He said Najib was a victim of double standards employed by the opposition.

“I would like to remind all political parties… don’t lie la saying that they don’t receive donations”.

Nazri also said that there should be legislation that makes declaring political donations mandatory, despite the resistance from opposition party.
