RNC Chair Denies Trump Considered Taking Back Pence VP Offer

He said Gov. Pence would stand up to America’s enemies and that he and the governor represent “the law-and-order candidates” at home.

In a 29-minute speech that often deviated from prepared remarks, Trump spoke at length about Democratic rival Hillary Clinton and his own proposals before interrupting himself by saying, “Back to Mike Pence” and offering his motivation for the selection. “He is a solid, solid person”, he said.

Clinton’s team was already painting Pence’s conservative social viewpoints as out of step with the mainstream. Her campaign also seized on Trump’s chaotic process for selecting and announcing his pick, painting Trump in a web video released on Saturday as “always divisive”.

Trump and Pence are expected to win the GOP presidential and vice-presidential nominations, respectively, at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this week.
