RNC Chair urges against changing convention rules before Cleveland

Although Wyoming Republican voters caucused on March 12 at local conventions to begin the delegate election process, Trump and his supporters called it a voter-less primary.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during a press conference with the New York Veteran Police Association in Staten Island, New York.

While Mr Trump has won 21 state nominating contests to Mr Cruz’s 10, the billionaire leads the Texas senator by only 196 delegates (755-559). Ted Cruz for president and believes Cruz will win the nomination at the convention, noting no one would have enough delegates on the first ballot, but he believes Cruz would win “either on the second or the third at the latest”. “In contrast, only 45% of Republicans who have a favorable opinion of Cruz say they will vote for him”. Alternates chosen were Clint Day, Carrie Johnson, and James Hall.

He has repeatedly complained about Colorado, which awarded all 34 of its delegates to Mr Cruz despite not holding a popular vote. It could spell bad news for Trump if he can’t secure the nomination before the convention.

Romney argues that even if Trump were to fail to reach the magic number of 1,237 delegates needed to capture the nomination going into Cleveland, he could still wrangle the votes by wooing delegates.

Trump has been critical of the process, again on Saturday calling it “rigged” while speaking at a rally in Syracuse, New York. Trump and Marco Rubio each won one delegate last month in Wyoming while one remained undecided. He said those decisions are up to each state, and there’s nothing the Republican National Committee can do to change them now.

If Trump falls short of the 1,237 delegates on the first ballot, he would start shedding delegates.

“They’re going nuts out there; they’re angry”, Trump said in Syracuse. Media reports from around the country show Cruz has picked up at least a handful more delegates than were allocated to him by primary voters. At that time, he urged Republicans to rally around an “anyone but Trump” strategy that would stop the NY businessman through John Kasich winning his home state of OH and Sen.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus fired back at Trump this week for accusing the party of having a rigged system.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea for us next week before the convention to make serious rules changes”, Priebus said, adding the environment is just too “politically charged” at this point.
