RNC chairman says Biden more ‘likeable’ than Clinton, would make tougher opponent

Whether there are enough uncommitted, deep-pocketed Democrats out there to fund a Biden bid is an open question.

Los Angeles doctor Howard Mandel gave $2,700 to the campaign of former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley – but also contributed $5,000 to Draft Biden 2016, a super PAC formed in March by those who hope Biden will run. He’s an extraordinary person and I count him as a dear friend.

Colorado is a swing state where 62 percent of voters in a recent poll say Clinton is not honest and trustworthy. Just last month, Clinton showed a 60-point national advantage over Sanders – 75 percent to 15 percent.

Only 30 percent of respondents said that Obama’s successor “should take an approach similar to that of Barack Obama“.

But Henderson did quote that there’s still a possibility for Biden to enter the race in August and build an organization that’s capable of competing in the early February Iowa assembly by November or December.

A prominent figure in South Carolina politics, Harpootlian has been publicly encouraging Biden to run for president for years, but had kept his distance from Draft Biden out of concern that it lacked the support of Biden and his political team.

Asked in the Oval Office whether he was running for president, Biden told Wall Street Journal reporter Carol Lee, “Only if you’re my running mate”.

Biden’s path, should he run, would not be easy.

“I don’t think that he’s going to be that effective as a campaigner”, the outspoken Republican business mogul said.

Biden’s aides have previously sought to dispel the notion that Harpootlian has inside knowledge about Biden’s political plans, despite his long track record of supporting the vice president.
