Roark, Ramos lead Nationals to 1-0 win over Mets
They moved one step closer to clinching a post-season berth without their manager in the dugout.

Wilson Ramos supplied the lone run in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over the Mets, swatting a solo home run in the seventh inning.
WASHINGTON (AP) – Tanner Roark pitched seven spotless innings and Wilson Ramos homered in the seventh inning as Washington beat NY. It was just one inning later that Ramos left the park for his 21st homer of the season.
The Nationals didn’t advance their first runner into scoring position until the bottom of the sixth, when Roark singled and took second on a wild pitch. They finished their head-to-head season series against the Mets at 12-7.
Before today’s start, Bench Coach and acting manager Chris Speier, who was filling in for Dusty Baker with the skipper away due to a death in the family, talked about getting to know Roark and being impressed by what he’s seen.
In his four starts this year, he has pitched at least five innings each time, and he has not allowed more than four runs in an outing despite facing challenging road assignments such as in tiny Camden Yards against the Baltimore Orioles and Citi Field against the Mets earlier this month. “I was saying some powerful prayers”.
“I was super excited going around the bases”, said Rivera, who was ambushed by a whipped-cream pie to the face when he retreated to the clubhouse postgame. “But I’ll tell you, we came off the field and still had some fight left”.
Montero worked around six hits to navigate five scoreless innings against Miami in his first start August 29, then walked four and allowed three runs in four innings his last time out against the Reds.
Blake Treinen pitched the eighth and Mark Melancon got three outs for his 42 save. The Giants, one-half game ahead of the Mets, were swept by the Padres, while the Cardinals dropped two of three to the Cubs.
The Mets managed just three hits in seven innings against Roark.
“We’ve got ourselves right where we need to be”, Collins said. This will be the final meeting between these two teams this season. “But they’re saying the same thing”.
Salas, who was 3-6 with the Angels, had not allowed a run in seven appearances since being acquired from Los Angeles on August 31. And the Mets weren’t able to score-despite having loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first.
“I’m extremely grateful for. them giving me the chance and putting me down in Viera [Fla.] and putting a program together”, Latos said.
“We have to play good baseball here”, Bruce said. But, the Washington Nationals couldn’t get anything out of the inning as Danny Espinosa, Stephen Drew (pinch-hitter), and Trea Turner all struck out. He has been the starting pitcher in seven of the team’s 12 shutouts this season. OF Justin Ruggiano, on the DL since August 27, underwent left shoulder surgery. Therefore, they’ll be counting heavily on their ace, Noah Syndergaard, to come through for them tonight. “I have to play him enough to keep his confidence up. But it’s just my wrist”.
WASHINGTON (AP) – T.J. Rivera will not forget his first major league home run anytime soon.
Cole is proving to be a much more mature pitcher than when he made his big league debut in April 2015 against the Braves in Atlanta. Washington opens April 3 at home against Miami. The rookies were given ladies tennis clothing as part of some light hazing.
