Robbie Brady had set the ball rolling with an eighth-minute free-kick and after Keane had made his contribution, Jonathan Walters claimed a double either side of half-time to ease the Republic to victory.

The 36-year-old’s first-half strike, his 68th for his country, saw him flick the ball over the head of his marker before thumping it home on the volley.

Jon Walters hit two more to complete the scoring on a night for memories and celebration.

“Will I miss it?”

“If you’re asking down the road would I like to be involved [in the Ireland set-up], of course”.

“It’s been a pleasure, a privilege and an honour to have played for Ireland”.

But it was all about Keane at the Aviva Stadium as he brought the curtain down on an worldwide career that began in 1998.

Keane said: “I said a few words to the players after the game and told them: ‘Never underestimate putting that green jersey on because it’s the best feeling in the world.’ It has been for me for 18 years”.

“As a young boy growing up in Dublin playing football on the street I could never have imaged the path my life would take”.

Keane admitted his first half goal was the flawless ending to an emotional week, a strike, he says, the whole country was willing him to score.

“And more importantly to finish on a high with this fantastic group of players, fantastic management staff. I don’t know any different”, Keane said.

Oman were always likely to become the 37th different country Keane scored against, especially with the entire team – and crowd – willing the Dubliner on.

Keane was replaced by Wes Hoolahan in the 57th minute and left the field to a rapturous applause and standing ovation, signifying the end of an era that is unlikely to be matched.

“To the best fans in the world I would like to say thanks very much”.

“The last week has been very positive from everybody in terms of the messages I’ve been getting from people I played with, friends and family, but I haven’t really reflected on it”. I wish them well.
