Robbie Lawler, Carlos Condit Gave Us the Greatest Welterweight Fight of All
Robbie Lawler kept the Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight title on his mantle with a contentious split decision over Carlos Condit in the UFC 195 main event on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

“Carlos is a hell of a fighter and he comes from one of the best camps in the world”, Lawler said.
Lawler’s title was unquestionable hanging in the balance going into the final round, and similar to his 2015 “Fight of the Year” with Rory MacDonald in July, somehow mustered he courage to win the fight and successfully defend his championship. Condit, 31, fell to 30-9.
Carlos Condit may have lost in his bid for the welterweight title on Saturday at UFC 195, but the label of loser just doesn’t seem to fit here. Nearly never, actually. He’s learned the importance of winning rounds, so maybe he’s more willing to include wrestling into his game plan for Condit, but ultimately Lawler’s mentality doesn’t hinge on securing points.
“I think that he’s definitely, I mean probably the most unsafe guy that I’ve ever faced”, Condit told FOX Sports on the UFC 195 media conference call this past Monday. Even the UFC president said that he scored it for Condit – three rounds to two. Condit, Tyron Woodley, and the victor of Stephen Thompson vs. Johny Hendricks are all viable options.
And when the fight was over, every fan wanted to see fight another round, but it also felt like two warriors giving all they got. Condit tags Lawler with a short left hook. Condit did the same for much of round 2, until Lawler blasted him and dropped Condit to the mat with a big counter shot.
For Lawler, the storybook journey continues. Lawler got it in the end, though late.
Both men rely on their striking for the most part, but Condit is a little more diverse in his overall abilities.
The challenger threw 87 strikes to Lawler’s 28 but only landed 16 to Lawler’s 12. “And, I like I said, I feel very, very confident”. In addition to the awesome main event, top-ranked Heavyweight contenders, Andrei Arlovski and Stipe Miocic, will battle in the co-featured fight of the night with a future title shot on the line.
Before the main event, Miocic likely earned a shot at the UFC heavyweight belt with an opening-minute victory.
He had previously held the WEC championship and the UFC interim belt.
“Carlos (Condit) is one hell of a fighter”. Ortega has won one of his two bouts in the UFC (other was a no contest) and he is a former Resurrection Fighting Alliance Featherweight Champion. “I didn’t want to make it a boring fight by grinding it out, but I couldn’t breathe at all”.
Condit was disappointed, but not surprised, after losing for the fourth time in six fights despite landing 198 strikes to 78 for the champion.
