De Niro, who was speaking in Sarajevo at an event marking the 40th anniversary of Taxi Driver – the Martin Scorsese film in which he starred – described what Trump has been saying as “ridiculous” and his nomination by the Republican party as “crazy”.
The Sarajevo Film Festival “was born during a dark and risky time to counter the butchering of war with a celebration of art and humanity”, De Niro said. Later, asked by film buffs about Bickle’s mental illness, De Niro found a parallel in Trump. “God help us”, 73-year-old actor said to roaring applause in the Sarajevo National Theatre.
De Niro pointed to a similarity between the Tribeca Film Festival, which he co-founded, and that of Sarajevo, grown from a series of screenings organized by film enthusiasts in a basement during the 1992-95 Bosnian war.
Donald Trump’s bid for the presidency has been rife with controversy, with a litany of his brazen remarks causing widespread offence, from his denigration of Hillary Clinton, to the disparaging remarks made about Mexicans, Muslims, war veterans, and many more.
De Niro, who played mentally disturbed cab driver Travis Bickle in the 1976 classic, also hinted at the similarities between Bickle and Trump. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
De Niro continued on the matter in saying that the media were giving Trump too much attention, yet they are now starting to really question some of the more controversial comments things that the candidate has said.
