The Christmas Eve pardon, which has become an annual tradition for the governor, was bestowed to 90 other people yesterday (Dec 24).
California’s governor has pardoned Robert Downey Jr. for a 1996 drug conviction that sent the actor to prison. The present governor of Calif., Gov. Jerry Brown, is not any totally different, and there’s a special addition to his pardon list let go just in time for the holidays.
“He has lived an honest and upright life, exhibited good moral character, and conducted himself as a law-abiding citizen”, Brown’s pardon message read, the standard language used in all pardons. After serving a year and six months in prison and three years on parole, he was discharged in 2004.
The pardon does not erase records of a conviction, but it restores voting rights, the right to serve on a jury and is a public proclamation of a former convict’s exemplary behavior.
A release from the governor’s office shows the actor’s pardon, which notes that “since his release from custody” Downey Jr.
The Iron Man franchise actor was subsequently incarcerated over the offences and later released in the year 2000.
