Robert Durst pleads guilty to federal gun possession charges

These words, muttered by NY real estate heir and suspected serial killer Robert Durst in the finale of HBO’s documentary series The Jinx, sent chills down the spines of viewers and put Durst back in the spotlight. The maximum would have been 10 years and a $250,000 fine. He will later face extradition to Los Angeles to face charges in the murder of his former friend, Susan Berman.

Robert Durst, the estranged son of real estate mogul Seymour Durst, creeped out a large swath of HBO’s subscriber base in 2015 when they saw him discuss investigations into his behavior on The Jinx. He describing the proposed sentence as “the result of very intense negotiations” among federal prosecutors, Durst’s attorneys, and the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office, which originally brought a weapons charge against Durst. The two were close friends for decades and Berman served as Durst’s informal spokesperson after his wife’s disappearance. During production of the series, filmmakers uncovered additional evidence connecting Durst to the deaths, including a note that appeared to be in his handwriting – and caught on tape an off-the-cuff comment in which Durst seems to confess to multiple murders.

According to various media reports, Durst ultimately reached a settlement under which the family paid him $60 million to $65 million. After his arrest, a package with $117,000 in cash arrived, addressed to Everette Ward. “Bob Durst did not kill Susan Berman and doesn’t know who did”, Durst’s attorney Dick DeGuerin said in a prepared statement.

Durst has admitted to killing and dismembering Morris Black, a man who lived across from him in Galveston, Texas, where Durst fled while authorities were trying to make a case against him in both killings. Durst, entered a guilty plea on an illegal firearm charge. 38 caliber revolver in a New Orleans hotel room, The New York Times reported.

Durst is a convicted felon, so he can not legally possess a gun.

Sunday marked 34 years since Kathie Durst was last seen, after an argument at the couple’s cottage in South Salem. Durst’s lawyers have rejected this.
