N.W.A had been nominated three previous years without winning approval, but the group enjoyed renewed attention in August with the biopic film “Straight Outta Compton”, which opened at the top of the United States box office. They’ll be only the fifth hip-hop act inducted into the Rock Hall.
Compton rap group N.W.A. and classic rock band Chicago are among the list of acts to be honored at the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony in April. Tickets for the ceremony will go on sale to the public in February. We got signed as a five-piece band. It would have been nice to see Yes inducted sooner, especially since its co-founder, bassist Chris Squire, died in 2015.
Cheap Trick wanted the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to want them – and now that they’re in, guitarist Rick Nielsen admits the feeling is pretty sweet.
Still, Chicago, Deep Purple, Cheap Trick, and Steve Miller have been around for some time, and they were all voted in.
The 2016 inductees for the the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame have been revealed. “We are extremely excited and we are happy for that”. Voters include over 800 record execs, music experts, music critics, and past winners. It was the third nomination for British metal band Deep Purple.
“N.W.A.’s improbable rise from marginalized outsiders to the most controversial and complicated voices of their generation remains one of rock’s most explosive, relevant and challenging tales”, the Hall of Fame said in its announcement. Sure, everybody loves singing along to Cheap Trick’s “Surrender” or playing air-guitar to Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water”, but they’re relics in comparison. No word on if the original members of each band will do so at this point.

On Wednesday, one day before the inductees were announce, drummer Paice raised questions about which Deep Purple members would be included. You also have to bear in mind, that if some people are inducted together, it could end in a punch-up. “I think that’s probably the right choice”, Steve tells Rolling Stone. This would please him I think because the music that we did is a force to be reckoned with. That avoids the problem. The inductees will be entered into the Hall of Fame on April 8, 2016.
