People were seen escaping the area in panic in live footage after the explosion as smoke rose.

Three rocket projectiles, fired from Syria, killed one and injured 10 others in Turkey’s southeastern border province of Kilis on Sunday evening, said Turkish officials. Four Syrian nationals, including three children, were killed in Monday’s attacks.

The rockets struck two houses in a poor neighbourhood near the town centre.

Riot police were present, but there were no clashes.

“I can not sleep, my son wakes up with nightmares, he can not sleep”. Sources said the military retaliated with shelling. “We are afraid to stay in our houses”, Ayse, a 46-year-old woman, told Reuters.

Kilis, which is housing an estimated 110,000 Syrian refugees, has been repeatedly hit by rocket fire in recent weeks.

Five rockets fired into Turkey from an area of Syria controlled by the Islamic State group hit the border town of Kilis on Sunday, killing one person and wounding 26, the deputy prime minister said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is expected on Saturday to visit the town of Gaziantep, 30 minutes drive from Kilis.

Kilis is the only town in Turkey where refugees from the war in Syria now outnumber Turkish locals. The Turkish howitzers at the border have a hard time firing on, mobile targets, according to the officials.
