Rocket League has hit the big league with $50 million in revenue

Rocket League has a winter holiday pack out now transforming the arena into an ice covered hockey rink and has also received a number of free updates and items.

Before Rocket League, Psyonix released Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars on PlayStation 3 in 2008. Wall Street Journal recently did a profile on them, in which it was reported that Rocket League has brought in almost $50 million in revenue across more than 8 million players this past year.

And so $2 million spent in development with revenue nearing $50 million, or 25 times the initial investment, for a dang good game.

“We paid the bills by working on some of the biggest games in the industry”, said Hagewood.

The full article is a fascinating read – and a fun one, too. Hagewood says “several million” copies of the game were downloaded during that promotional period, and Psyonix also sent copies of the game to popular YouTube and Twitch personalities. It launched on the PC and PlayStation 4 at the same time, though the PS4 release was free for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

All that success has lead to using famous and licensed cars.
