Rocket returns from space
SpaceX completed its historic rocket landing Monday night, but Jeff Bezos says he got there first.

Elon Musk attends the SpaceX Commerical Launch Facility on September 22, 2014.
Monday night’s mission was the first time SpaceX has been able to successfully touch down the Falcon 9 post-launch.
Musk was at the launch site in Florida where he said the rocket appeared to be failing in its landing, leading to a potential explosion.
Creating reusable rockets is important for lowering the cost of space travel, which could make space tourism and a trip to Mars more feasible.
The mission’s primary objective was the delivery of 11 satellites into a low Earth orbit constellation for ORBCOMM, a machine-to-machine and Internet of Things solutions provider.
Returning a Falcon 9 rocket from space after a successful launch has been a major goal for Musk and SpaceX since the company’s founding in 2002. Welcome to the club!
In 2014, SpaceX twice reentered a Falcon 9 first stage from space and landed it in the Atlantic Ocean. Musk called the moment revolutionary, saying that it landed “dead center on the landing pad”.
This is technically not the first time this feat has been accomplished; Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket became the first reusable rocket last month.
But SpaceX’s Falcon rocket reached higher heights than Blue Origin’s November test flight. Landing a first-stage rocket means the craft can be reused for future launches. “Then I went back into launch control and saw this fantastic video of the rocket on the pad…” “It’s the first one we’ve brought back”.
Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith, the top commander at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, was quoted by a news agency as saying that the returning booster “placed the exclamation mark on 2015”. The SpaceX booster was more powerful and flying faster in order to put satellites into orbit.

Safely landing these rockets can save companies a lot of money, said Carissa Christensen, managing partner at the consulting firm Tauri Group.
