McHale took Houston all the way to the Western Conference Finals last season where they lost to the Golden State Warriors. Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski was first with the report.
The Rockets gave the McHale an extension in 2014. General managers around the league, including in Houston, believed it was just a matter of time until Bickerstaff was a successful head coach in the league.
Nevertheless, the Rockets are pushing for results now, and several elite coaches with Rockets ties in the past – including Jeff Van Gundy and Tom Thibodeau – could lurk as future candidates. There are many people who believe Bickerstaff deserved a shot at a head coaching job and now he will have his chance with a team loaded with talent but with that comes extremely high expectations.
Things haven’t been going well for the Rockets. McHale had a record of 189-123 in the regular season, and a 13-16 record in the post season. “Bottom line, we haven’t put together really good basketball, all year”.
