“The very first neighborhood watch group that got started in Bangor is a ideal example”.
“When you get these young kids at such an age where they’re so moldable, we want to get out there and show them we’re the good guys and gals”, Martinez said. It was just that quick. “This is the comfortable setting that they can feel comfortable, our officers feel comfortable, and ask those questions and build that trust between one another”, said Joy Nelson of the Bluffton Police Department.
Last year, hundreds came out in Ithaca to spend time with neighbors, police officers and firefighters and enjoy free food, music and games.
Murfreesboro and other surrounding cities are also celebrating National Night Out with most events being held from 5 p.m.to 8 p.m. However, times vary by location. After a tense and violent year between police and the public, people we spoke with say coming together is what we all need.
This year will be an especially important event after recent violence against officers, said Sgt. Joe Tedeschi with the police division’s Community Response Team.
“Right now across the nation, it’s been pretty tough for police officers”.
Hamilton said he is hoping to make this an annual event.
Thousands attended National Night at Meador Park Monday evening.
“There’s so much going on now that if we don’t bring our kids to stuff like this, the stuff they see on TV, the shootings and stuff like that… will traumatize them”, Howard said.
