Story could miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his left thumb, putting the brakes on his record-setting rookie season and a damper on Colorado’s recent surge in the standings.

Story was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday and he will likely have surgery on his injured left thumb. He was initially diagnosed with a jammed thumb, but further tests revealed a torn ligament. Originally, there was hope that it was just a bad bruise and that Story would be able to return to the lineup in a few days, but that’s obviously no longer the case. Story has been one of the keys to the offense as home runs keep being hit from the bat.
Dodgers option Puig • Los Angeles has optioned Yasiel Puig and Ross Stripling to the minors to make room for their new additions, outfielder Josh Reddick and reliever Jesse Chavez.
The Rockies will have star rookie pitcher Jon Gray on the mound Tuesday as they open up their series against the Dodgers, and the veteran Descalso will be at shortstop in the opener. Ynoa is hitting.266/.330/.359 and last was in the Major Leagues in 2015 with Colorado.
INDIANS: All-Star RHP Danny Salazar went on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation.
Red Sox promote prospect • Boston called up top prospect Andrew Benintendi from Double-A Portland, hours after the non-waiver trade deadline passed. Benintendi, 22, was the seventh pick in last year’s draft.
