Rodgers to take on old friend in his Firm debut

It will be the first time Brendan Rodgers has experienced the intensity of the Glasgow derby – arguably the most vociferous match in Britain and one that he will be desperate to win to extend Celtic’s lead at the top of the SPFL.

This edition has even more meaning than most: it will be the first league meeting between the Glaswegian rivals in over four years.

I think you have seen in each of the four games how we can play and hurt teams, but it’s not been a sustained performance over the 90 minutes and that’s something we have to put right for the weekend.

Rangers’ spiral into financial chaos and demotion to Scotland’s lower divisions left the Scottish Premiership bereft of its standout fixture while Rangers scrapped their way back out of the wilderness to their rightful place.

Chief Superintendent Brian McInulty said: “I would like to thank all the supporters who came to enjoy the match today in a safe and responsible manner”.

Celtic kept its flawless start with four wins in four matches.

NO ONE would confuse the match scheduled for September 10th between Celtic and Rangers (pictured, in 2014) in Glasgow for top-flight, world-class football.

Matches between the two sides run deeper than football because of the volatile mix of religion, politics and sporting history. Rangers’ fanbase are mostly Protestant, while Celtic’s are Catholic.

Joe Garner netted the only goal for Rangers late in the first-half and they were unable to capitalise on some early second period pressure. However, hopes of a comeback were dampened when Sinclair made it 3-1 before Rangers debutant defender Philippe Senderos was sent off by referee Willie Collum for picking up two bookings, the second for a hand ball. Three minutes later referee Willie Collum was forced to do more pointing tunnel-wards after Rangers assistant David Weir was too aggressive in protests to fourth official Kevin Clancy.

“People keep talking about Joey Barton versus Scott Brown”, Barton said.

Foderingham made a fine save from Armstrong’s long-range effort before Callum McGregor replaced Hoops skipper Scott Brown, whose much anticipated battle with Joey Barton did not materialise.

There was also fan trouble at the London Stadium as West Ham fans fought among themselves during the club’s 4-2 Premier League defeat to Watford.
