World men’s tennis number three, Roger Federer of Switzerland, has pulled out of the Rio Olympics and said he would miss the rest of the season.
In a post on his Facebook page, he called it a “very hard position” that he made after consultations with his doctors and team.
Posting on his Facebook page, Federer confirmed his withdrawal from the Olympics and the rest of the 2016 season but he insisted that he wanted to play on once his body had fully recovered.
“The love I have for tennis, the competition, tournaments and of course you, the fans remains intact”, he said.
The arthroscopic procedure Federer had on his knee in February, repairing torn cartilage, was the first operation of his lengthy and accomplished career.
The Swiss has played only 28 matches this season and has not won a title. He completed the match, but afterwards admitted that he was uncertain what damage had been done.
It, however, seems that he has not yet fully recovered from the same as the Swiss announced that he’s chose to end the ongoing season ahead of time.
Federer is scheduled to begin his 2017 season at the Hopman Cup Down Under. Fifteen years on, it will be his first return to the event since then.
However, he plans to come back next year and play for another few.
Now aged 34, Tuesday’s announcement also probably ended the 2012 silver medallist’s hopes of ever winning an Olympic singles title.
The seven-time Wimbeldon champion turns 35 next month.

Switzerland’s Olympic association rued the withdrawal of Federer, his country’s flag bearer at both the 2004 and 2008 Games, but chef de mission Ralph Stoeckli sympathised with the tennis star’s decision. He has recently gone through a knee surgery, which is a major reason for him to not take part in the games.
