Rogers Communications (RCI +1.4%) is making a bigger move into next-gen TV, with a rollout of gigabit Internet speeds, 4K TV and a new capable set-top box and high dynamic range (HDR) broadcast commitments.

“4K gets you closer to the action than the linesman and first base coach, and HDR brings those images to life with intense colour and contrast”.

Thus, not only does this announcement by Rogers mean soon-to-arrive nationwide access to live streamed sports in full native 4K ultra HD resolution, the content delivered will also have the bursting precision of contrast and exquisite color shading that come with HDR encoded into it.

More than over 20 National Hockey League games this season will be available in 4K as well, starting with the Toronto Maple Leafs game against the Montreal Canadiens on January 23, 2016.

A growing list of original series on Netflix to 4K as Narcos, Marvel’s Daredevil, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp sense8, Grace and Frankie, Chef’s Table, Bloodline, House of Cards and more.

“The Blue Jays are having a terrific season, and the fan enthusiasm in Canada is palpable heading into the Postseason”, said Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. The technology will completely change the viewing experience matches. “Partners like Rogers spark innovation in the game and bring fans even closer to the action”.

“Canadians love shomi and they will be able to enjoy an even sharper, higher resolution image when they are watching great movies and shows in 4K”, said David Asch, Senior Vice President and General Manager, shomi.

Rogers Communications (TSX:RCI.B) on Monday became the latest carrier to offer preorders for its Ignite Gigabit offering, which will be available in certain areas of the country later this year. “TELUS plans to offer families and businesses in Vancouver increasingly higher speeds over this gigabit-enabled network in the coming years, as demand continues to increase”.

“The number of devices connected to the internet in the home is increasing and they are consuming more internet every month”.

In an effort to ensure all of those Netflix titles make it to Canadian TV sets with the highest picture quality possible, Rogers has also struck a new partnership with the service to link directly to Netflix servers.
